As an undergraduate at Wesleyan University, Nélida Samara developed Ezkoktin Tlalli (2023), a year’s worth reflection of her personal viewpoint through grief and resilience. The complex gates of loss can be felt through the often visceral yet vacant emotional landscapes within the imagery that conjure a sense of wander and wonder. This project “look at the water, see how she’s come for us” is a personal navigation through the turbulance of grief. The internal suffocation, the shatter, the breaks, and dissolution are made visual through 35mm analogue film. See More

		<description>Ezkoktin Tlalli&#38;nbsp;As a Questbridge Scholar at Wesleyan University, Samara developed Ezkoktin Tlalli (2023), a twenty-image series reflecting upon her personal viewpoint through grief and resilience. The complex gates of loss can be felt through the often visceral, emotional landscapes within the imagery that conjure a sense of wander and wonder. Ezkoktin Tlalli showcases her technical skills in the darkroom as well as the development of her handmade paper for photographic printing. 
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
 Within the imagery, Samara’s own body becomes a place of resistance, a theme rooted in the cuerpo-territorio (body-territory) land resistance decolonial feminist movements throughout indigenous Latin American communities. Samara similarly explores this theme of resistance through bodies of water, animalia, forms that light and shadow create alongside the human form. The organic nature of their handmade paper additionally fuses the bond between the bodies pictured and the lands upon which Samara is creating.&#38;nbsp;
&#38;nbsp; 
This fusion of land and body is a manifestation of the kinship that Earth provides. The photographs become the medium, literally and spiritually, through which Samara can express and heal.

Ezkoktin Tlalli (2023) was formally presented at Zilkha Gallery on April 26th through April 30th as part of Nélida Samara’s Studio Art and Environmental Studies undergraduate degree completion. The exhibit included the twenty images seen above printed on handmade paper that Samara dedicated to formulating alongside the image-making process. Additionally, Samara’s studio practice inspired her to explore alternative methods of printing that ranged from cyanotype printing to chlorophyll prints, five of which were presented in this exhibi.

Snow Raven (Haar Suor) is a shaman, a mystic, from one of the most cold and remote places on Earth, Yakutia, otherwise known as the republic of Sakha. She is a traditional and contemporary vocalist and a channel for the sounds of Earth. From her high pitched bird sounds to the deep rumble of reindeer throat singing, the vibrations that flow through Snow Raven have the ability to move energy throughout the cells of our bodies. She has a striking and graceful presence and a passion filled with purpose. Her art is infused with a deep desire for the healing of our Earth mother. For the awakening of care and awareness amongst humanity– a shift in the paradigm towards a way of living that is harmonious and in reciprocity. It was an honor and a pleasure to create these photographs with her.

The young oak grove that surrounds this sculptural installation is one of the few moments of breath and shelter from the blazing Lake County sun, throughout the entire Trailside park. Inspired by this feeling of safety and shelter, Samara and Niko created woven speaking vessels utilizing oak branches from within the park that allow viewers an intimate opportunity to speak their thoughts, words of gratitude, ponderings etc. into the organic cone-like structures. These structures are characterized as speaking devices by their megaphone-esque shape yet differentiated by the woven and organic nature of their material. By trimming the lower branches of the young oaks, Niko and Samara partake in indigenous forest management practices that benefit the overall health of the regrowing forest. Cutting the lower branches encourages upward growth of the young trees and helps define the trunks of the trees which in turn clears space around the base for animals to keep cool in the tree’s shade.&#38;nbsp;The action of creating art on-site and utilizing oak cuttings from within the park, is reciprocity in action.Integral to this installation is a sound piece titled "Voices of Earth". &#38;nbsp;Within you’ll hear individuals responding to the prompt: What is something you would like to say to nature? Please find a quiet place to listen.
